Federal Hill Food & History Tour

Monday, September 25, 2017

9 to 11 am (Leave Providence Biltmore Hotel lobby at 8:30 am for a short one mile walk from the hotel to meet at the Pinecone Arch at Atwells Avenue)

Since 1886, Federal Hill in Providence has been the center for Italian immigrants. Immerse yourself in the everyday living of one of the most respected "Little Italy" neighborhoods in North America. This walking tour will provide you with the most real-life experience and in-depth discovery of the life, customs and social fabric of the area. Join Master Chef Walter Potenz, an expert and historian on Federal Hill, in the discovery of great foods and history.

This food tour will take you to different locations to sample cheeses, charcuterie and antipasti while enjoying a presentation on ingredients present in the repertoire of Italian cookery. You will also learn food terminology, products information, how to shop, how to store foods and anything that may be of interest in expanding your culinary horizon. Throughout the walking event, you will meet people who make it possible for Federal Hill to be recognized as a national food and history destination.

The tour will end at Chef Walter's cooking school where Chef Walter will present an olive oil and balsamic tasting and a taste of the wine of the day. After the tasting, you  may visit the Federal Hill Heritage Center photo exhibit of the first and only Italian immigration collection in Rhode Island, which is dedicated to preserving the integrity and honoring the richness of Italian American historical heritage in Rhode Island.
