"______________ For the Nation" Watch: Elevation

A story from the Associated Press on the Boston Globe web site focuses on cal by the NRC for an update of elevation data across the US:
The National Research Council yesterday proposed an "Elevation for the Nation" program to produce up-to-date data.
The story reports on the effort by FEMA to move from paper to digital Flood Maps, but notes that the basic elevation data behind those Flood Maps are in some cases decades out of date. And it explains, very briefly "Lidar."

This is not a bad idea but why do they limit it to only LiDAR tecnology? There are other equally accurate options available these days. If they are going to move forward with calling this Elevation for the Nation they need to throw out the LiDAR requirement and open the collection to any technology that meets a specific accuracy specification and let the best available technology be used.

If you actually read the NAS report, you will see that it is a comrehensive study of all available technologies with regard to the accuracy requirements for floodplain mapping. The conclusion that lidar be used as the primary (not only, but primary) tool for data acquisition was drawn from this comprehensive study, after much testimony from government and industry representatives and review by experts in the field.
